White History

I sent this first verse of ” White History to John Eagle, and he said touchy subject, but he would see what the muse might bring.

Had a girl at the HBC
Asked me why we gotta learn white history
They don’t want to learn ours she said
Why should we learn theirs
She made me think
She made me think

Well, I did think about all the controversy these days about flags, statues, and historical figures. John was wonderfully ambiguous in places, but overall his viewpoint is clear.

Chorus

History is history
Why make it such a mystery?
Let it ALL be told
Even all the misery

It’s a question for our age
The prints all black
on a white, white page
ebony and ivory
said the thoughtful sage
teach it one and all
covered like shoulders with a shawl

We know George and Thomas
Abe, Teddy and FDR
Just ask any patron
Sitting in a bar
But what about Harriet
And her heavy load
Working on the underground railroad?

We know all that is white
On the printed page
How did we lose sight
Of all that is right?
When history is made
From Garvey to Boothe
Teach it, it’s the truth
